Hardik Pandya opens up on his feelings to lead Gujarat Titans

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) becoming a 10-team affair from the upcoming season, one of the two new teams is from the state of Gujarat. The CVC-owned franchise will make its debut in the cash-rich league in 2022 and has named former Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Hardik Pandya as their skipper.

As the team name was revealed as 'Gujarat Titans' on Wednesday, the captain of the franchise spoke at length on the opportunity to represent his home state in the IPL.

"The name is great. It has an impact. And it represents the true Gujarati in us. It's a very proud moment. My family is also happy," Hardik said as quoted on Star Sports.

Hardik made his IPL debut for MI in 2015 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. Hardik's 6-year stint with his former franchise includes 92 matches, 1476 runs and 42 wickets.

Speaking further, the 28-year-old added, "Obviously, before this, I played for Mumbai Indians. It will always be close to my heart. But to represent my home team and that too to lead the side is something very special. I am very happy."

Hardik played in the all-rounder's role for MI and India. But a back injury has forced him to play as a specialist batter in the recent past. As the cricketer is expected to be fully fit for IPL 2022, his performance will be seen with a microscope, considering India's desperate need of a multi-dimensional player.

Gujarat Titans picked three players namely Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill ahead of the mega-auction and currently have Rs 57 crore left in their purse.

IND vs WI | 2nd ODI: Prasidh Krishna scalps four as India take unassailable lead

Riding on some brilliant show from the bowlers and especially Prasidh Krishna, India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ODI series against West Indies in Ahmedabad. Chasing 238, the visitors were bowled out for 193 in 46 overs with Krishna picking up four wickets. West Indies had a decent start to the chase with Shai Hope and Brandon King putting up 32 runs on the board before Prasidh removed King for 18 off 20. The Caribbean side then lost the way and suffered another batting collapse to get reduced to 76/5. Shamarh Brooks and Akeal Hosein then tried to steady the ship with a partnership of 41 runs for the sixth wicket. But Deepak Hooda who made his debut for India in the previous game picked the first wicket of his career after he removed Brooks for 44 off 64. The visiting team didn't really get back on track as they lost a few more wickets and were eventually bundled out. Hosein scored 34 off 52 while Odean Smith chipped in with a 20-ball 24 but their efforts weren't really enough to take the team home. Apart from Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur picked up a couple of wickets while Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, and Hooda had one wicket to their names apiece. Earlier, India made a few tweaks in the batting unit as KL Rahul returned and replaced Ishan Kishan while the team management decided to ask Rishabh Pant to open the innings with Rohit Sharma. The experiment didn't really work as India lost early wickets but KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav resisted well and chipped in with 91 runs for the fourth wicket. While KL was run out for 49, SKY struck 64 during the course. The home side also lost wickets at regular intervals but a responsible and quick 29 off 25 from Hooda helped India put 237/9 in 50 overs on the board. "Obviously winning the series is a good feeling. There were some challenges. The partnership between Rahul and Surya had a lot of maturity. We got to a respectable total in the end. We knew we could fight it out. The entire unit came out and bowled superbly. It is important for these guys to bat under pressure and that is how you will judge their character. Surya had to take his time and understand what the team wants from him," Rohit said after the match.
