BPL 2022 | Ravi Bopara escapes ban but cops hefty fine over ball tampering saga

Former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara’s ball tampering saga came to an end after copping a blow of 75 per cent of his match fee and adding three demerit points to his name.

The sentence which was earlier thought to be a three-match ban was brought down by the Bangladesh Premier League technical committee under Article 8.2.3.4 which states that the authorities have the power to increase or decrease any sanctions imposed on a particular player.

The saga started during the ninth over of  Sylhet Sunrisers game against Khulna Tigers where Bopara was spotted by the umpires fiddling with the ball. While it looked like Bopara was trying to get a strong knuckle ball grip, the on field umpires thought it best to replace the white ball and penalise Sylhet by 5 runs for changing the conditions of the ball.

Bopara however, came out in the press conference later that day and detailed the entire incident. According to the right hander, he was trying to get a good grip on a wet ball. He further stated that it was unfortunate to have copped a blow and termed it as a mistake.

“I think there was a mistake there. It is disappointing but this is life,” Bopara concluded.

IND vs WI | 2nd ODI: Prasidh Krishna scalps four as India take unassailable lead

Riding on some brilliant show from the bowlers and especially Prasidh Krishna, India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ODI series against West Indies in Ahmedabad. Chasing 238, the visitors were bowled out for 193 in 46 overs with Krishna picking up four wickets. West Indies had a decent start to the chase with Shai Hope and Brandon King putting up 32 runs on the board before Prasidh removed King for 18 off 20. The Caribbean side then lost the way and suffered another batting collapse to get reduced to 76/5. Shamarh Brooks and Akeal Hosein then tried to steady the ship with a partnership of 41 runs for the sixth wicket. But Deepak Hooda who made his debut for India in the previous game picked the first wicket of his career after he removed Brooks for 44 off 64. The visiting team didn't really get back on track as they lost a few more wickets and were eventually bundled out. Hosein scored 34 off 52 while Odean Smith chipped in with a 20-ball 24 but their efforts weren't really enough to take the team home. Apart from Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur picked up a couple of wickets while Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, and Hooda had one wicket to their names apiece. Earlier, India made a few tweaks in the batting unit as KL Rahul returned and replaced Ishan Kishan while the team management decided to ask Rishabh Pant to open the innings with Rohit Sharma. The experiment didn't really work as India lost early wickets but KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav resisted well and chipped in with 91 runs for the fourth wicket. While KL was run out for 49, SKY struck 64 during the course. The home side also lost wickets at regular intervals but a responsible and quick 29 off 25 from Hooda helped India put 237/9 in 50 overs on the board. "Obviously winning the series is a good feeling. There were some challenges. The partnership between Rahul and Surya had a lot of maturity. We got to a respectable total in the end. We knew we could fight it out. The entire unit came out and bowled superbly. It is important for these guys to bat under pressure and that is how you will judge their character. Surya had to take his time and understand what the team wants from him," Rohit said after the match.
