Glenn Maxwell’s Stunning Boundary Catch Vs SA Was No Fluke, Practice Footage Proves It

Australia outclassed South Africa by 17 runs in the first T20I at the Marrara Oval in Darwin to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. One of the biggest match-defining moments of the game occurred in the very final over during South Africa’s tense pursuit, at a time when rampaging Ryan Rickelton was just a couple of big hits away from taking his team home.

Facing Ben Dwarshuis in the last over, Rickelton launched the Australian speedster towards long-on, only to find an agile Glenn Maxwell completing a sensational boundary catch around the ropes. Jumping from inside the rope, Maxwell caught the ball and released it mid-air, jumped back in and completed the catch without touching the boundary.

Glenn Maxwell, one of the masters of boundary catching in world cricket, has apparently aced this artform through intense training. While the all-rounder has previously snared many such catches in international cricket as well as in BBL cricket, Maxwell is one of the few players in the world who consistently incorporates boundary-catching drills into his regular training sessions, perfecting the timing and footwork needed for such high-pressure moments.

On Monday, August 11; i.e., a day after Australia’s comprehensive win over South Africa in Darwin, the official social media accounts of BBL shared a parallel footage of Glenn Maxwell performing boundary catching in BBL and international games.

Moreover, the footage was also inscribed with a snippet from Maxwell’s pre-match training drills where he was seen jumping in and around the boundary as part of his fielding practise.

AUS vs SA 1st T20I: As It Happened

Australia batted first and amassed 178 from 20 overs courtesy of Tim David’s explosive 52-ball 83. Glenn Maxwell scored just a single from five deliveries before he was trapped by Senuran Muthusamy at 75-6.

Chasing 179, the South African team was restricted to 161-9 by Australian pacers Josh Hazlewood (3-27) and Ben Dwarshuis (3-26). The two teams will now face each other in the second T20I on August 12 at the same venue.
