The fallout of a poor T20 competition starts with the captain stepping away from captaincy, and Melbourne Stars' Glenn Maxwell did exactly the same, after a poor Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 season for the franchise.

As reported by CODE Cricket, Maxwell has decided to step down from the post of Stars' captain, after the Melbourne-based club finished a disappointing sixth in the BBL 2023-24 season with four wins and six losses.

The Australian all-rounder led Stars for five years and made it into the finals of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 editions. Maxwell still has two years of his BBL contract with Melbourne remaining and is eager to contribute as a player while also providing support for the new incoming leader.

The 35-year-old is the Stars' highest run-getter, and has also slammed the most sixes (100+), having joined the club back in 2011-12 season.

Interestingly, Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are the only two clubs that have not managed to win a BBL title since its inception.

The BBL 13 began on a sour note for the Stars, who lost their first three matches and then produced a stellar run, winning their next four games in a decisive manner.

However, the Stars' joy was short-lived as they lost all their remaining three matches, and were eliminated from the playoffs race.

This was also the first season for Stars under new coach Peter Moores, who will also head their staff next season.
