Promising fast bowlers George Gowler and George Weldon have signed rookie contracts with the Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. The academy graduates have put pen to paper on a two-year professional contract.

The academy graduates have put pen to paper on a two-year professional contract.

The youngsters were part of the Northamptonshire team in the 2022 edition of the Second Eleven Championship.

Gowler scalped 11 wickets in six games, with the best match figures of 4/92 against Nottinghamshire. In the 2021 edition, he had six scalps in two appearances.

On the other hand, Weldon managed to take five wickets in three matches of the 2022 edition of the tournament. Furthermore, he took 13 wickets in the ECB Under 18 50 over County Cup, with best figures of 3 for 3.

In this regard, Northamptonshire Academy Director Kevin Innes thinks Weldon has progressed well in the last three years and was impressed with his pace and control.

Here's how Innes praised the young guns

"He (Gowler) is a tall, ‘hit the deck’ type bowler who’s really impressed with his pace and bounce and particularly the control he brings around off stump. George Weldon is a product of our partnership with Bucks cricket so it’s great to see that bearing fruit."

In the end, Innes opined both pacers have a good chance to push forward their careers and wished them well with their rookie deals.

Regarding team performance, Northamptonshire finished sixth in the County 2022 Championship with two victories in 14 games.
