Virat Kohli punched out an unbeaten 122 against Afghanistan to give India a consolation victory at the end of their Asia Cup 2022 campaign. The ton marked the 71st of Kohli’s international career, and the first of his notable T20I journey for the ‘Men in Blue’.

Moreover, his latest effort also marked his first international ton across any formats since his pink-ball batting brilliance against Bangladesh in November 2019.

Gautam Gambhir believes hundred came at a right time for Kohli

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir recently gave his take on his ex-teammate’s drought ending hundred. While speaking on Star Sports, Gambhir stated that while Kohli’s ton has come after a long time, the batter had earned the team’s backing through his tough times for his heavy run-scoring in the past.

He also opined that Kohli’s century came at a right time for India. Additionally, Gambhir believes no one else would have survived in international cricket had they not reached a triple-digit score for three successive years.

“Look, he has to realize that it has been three years, not just three months. Three years is a very long time. I am not going to be critical of him but he has earned this backing as he has scored loads of runs in the past.”

“I don’t think any younger player would have survived in international cricket had they not got a 100 in the last three years. This eventually had to happen and it has happened just at the right time. But let’s be fair, I don’t think anyone would have survived for this long.”
