Virat Kohli cracked an unbeaten 122 against Afghanistan in India’s Asia Cup 2022 closure. His innings marked his maiden hundred in T20Is and his first international ton overall since November 2019.

After his knock, the right-hander himself admitted that he never expected to end his century-drought through a T20I innings. Contrary to his statement, the cricketer holds a staggering record in IPL T20 matches, leading the tournament’s run-scoring charts and having compiled all his centuries as an opener for RCB.

Harbhajan Singh believes Kohli as an opener is a brilliant idea

Cricketer-turned-commentator Harbhajan Singh believes Kohli should be a regular opening option for India in their lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2022 next month. While speaking on India Today, the legendary spinner stated that the batting maverick often opens the innings for RCB already and seems to relish his role at the top. He said:

“He has been opening the innings even in franchise cricket, even for RCB while he was captaining. When he opened the innings for RCB, he scored 973 runs in one season. So, this role is not new to him, he sort of likes that spot.”

Singh further praised Kohli, describing the former Indian skipper as a “top player” alongside regular Team India openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. The spinner added that the team management should still consider the idea of dropping Rahul to number three at Kohli’s expense.

However, he added that he was not sure if India coach Rahul Dravid will go with the decision.

“Yeah, Virat opening would be a brilliant idea, going forward. But I am not sure if Rahul will stick with that.”
