Indian players during Australia tour [Source: @BCCI/x]
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named India’s 18-player squad for the upcoming five-match away Test series against England. As one can expect, the selection committee announced several changes to the Indian team that travelled to Australia late last year, only to return back home with a 1-3 drubbing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series.
Shubman Gill has been appointed as new Indian captain, with blistering wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant being named as his deputy. Here, we take a look at all the changes made within the Indian team from the previous 2024-25 BGT tour of Australia to the upcoming tour of England.
Changes in the Indian team between two Test series
Ever since Team India took flight for Australia late last year, several senior pros like all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, legendary batter Virat Kohli and national captain Rohit Sharma have all announced their retirements from Test cricket.
Including the three aforementioned retirees, we examine all players who were part of the Indian team for the Australian tour but will not be travelling to England this time around.
Furthermore, we will also check the list of players who have been either called back into the national side after some time as well as cricketers who are poised for their Test debuts in England from next month onwards.
Players who are out of Indian team – Ravichandran Ashwin (retired), Virat Kohli (retired), Rohit Sharma (retired), Sarfaraz Khan, Devdutt Padikkal (injury), Tanush Kotian and Harshit Rana
Players called back/poised for Test debuts – Karun Nair (recalled), Sai Sudharasan (yet to play Test cricket), Shardul Thakur (recalled), Arshdeep Singh (yet to play Test cricket), Kuldeep Yadav (recalled)
The Indian team will face England in the first Test of their five-match tour from June 20 onwards in Headingley, Leeds. The series will also launch the 2025-27 WTC cycle for the two sides.
