In a concerning development on the eve of India's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 opener against Australia, star opener Shubman Gill finds himself in a race against time to regain fitness.

The 24-year-old has been grappling with an illness suspected to be dengue, raising doubts about his availability for the crucial clash on October 8th.

While there had been speculation surrounding Gill's participation, India's head coach Rahul Dravid provided a glimmer of hope to Indian fans, stating that Gill has shown signs of improvement.

"He’s certainly feeling better today," Dravid confirmed on Friday

As per the OneCricket sources, Gill is likely to miss more than one game in the World Cup. This unfortunate turn of events means that he will be sidelined for India's opener against Australia and subsequent matches against Afghanistan on October 11th and the much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals on October 14th.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, said in the press conference,

"I want Shubman Gill to get well soon. We will give every chance to him to recover. He's still not ruled out. He is a young guy, he is fit body and he will recover soon."

Dengue is notorious for its unpredictable recovery timeline. While players typically require 7-10 days to regain match fitness, a drop in platelet count can extend the recuperation period significantly.

Gill's prolific partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma at the top of the order has been a key asset for the Indian team, making his absence a cause for concern.

If Gill is indeed sidelined for an extended period, it could prove to be a substantial setback for the Indian squad as they aim to make their mark in the World Cup.
