Over the years, the game of cricket has seen some iconic rivalries. But out of all of them, the oldest and the most iconic one remains between Australia and England. 'The Ashes' is what the series between these two teams is called. This face-off between the two teams have given the spectators some iconic cricket battles over the years. 

Going down the history of the game, the day 19th August bears particular significance in the history of England cricket. On this day in 1953, England won the Oval Test and regained the ashes after a waist of 18 years and 362 days. 

Australia posted a fighting total in the first innings

In the last and final match of the series, Australia batted first and posted a total of 275 runs. Lindsay Hassett, the Captain of the Aussies and the lower order batter Ray Lindwall scored half-centuries to guide the visting team to a respectable total.

In reply, England scored 306 runs in their first innings and took a lead of 31 runs. The batting of England was lead by skipper, Leonard Hutton and middle-order batter, Trevoer Bailey. 

England changed the momentum of the game in the third innings of the match

In the third innings of the game, the Aussies failed to show the resilience that the situation demanded. They scored only 162 in their second dig of the match and gave a target of 132 runs to the home team. 

England chased down the target rather easily with eight wickets in hand. This win meant that the England won the series by a 1-0 margin. The Ashes came to England after the 1932-33 series. Between these two series, six Ashes were held, out of which five were by the Aussies and one ended in a draw.
