England Cricket announces Young Lions squad for Sri Lanka Test series

England selectors on Friday (19 August) announced the 13-member U-19 squad for the first of the two Tests against the Sri Lanka U-19 team. The series is slated to commence on Sunday (21 August). 

Durham batter Ben McKinney has been named the captain of the four-day fixture taking place at Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford.

The squad for the second fixture at Incora County Ground in Derby will be announced ahead of that game. 

Squad: Ben McKinney (c), Tom Aspinwall, George Bell, Tommy Boorman, Ben Cliff, Bertie Foreman, Alex Horton, Matthew Hurst, Eddie Jack, Dominic Kelly, Ben Parker, Harry Singh, Ross Whitfield 

ECB's Performance coach hopes for the best from players

"We’re really looking forward to this series and seeing how a wide range of the best young men’s players in this country adapt to the challenge and opportunity of international age-group cricket, " said Richard Dawson, ECB's Elite Performance Pathway Coach. 

“The key for us when selecting a squad is working out with the counties what’s best for each individual player, and for the first Test match - in a number of cases - we agreed that it was best for them to continue playing domestic cricket." 

Rehan Ahmed in contention for limited-overs series

After the two four-day fixtures, the limited-overs series will take place between England U-19 and Sri Lanka U-19 team. The selectors have urged different County teams to provide sufficient chances to the players in contention, for preparing themselves for the series. 

The talented players like Rehan Ahmed and Tom Prest find their names in the probable squad as well. In particular, Ahmed is currently featuring for Southern Brave in the ongoing Hundred Men's competition. 

Players in contention: Rehan Ahmed, Sonny Baker, James Rew, Jacob Bethell, James Coles, Will Luxton, Tom Prest, James Sales and Fateh Singh.

Series Schedule:

Sunday 21-Wednesday 24 August: First LV= Insurance U19 Test - England U19 v Sri Lanka U19; Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford

Sunday 28-Wednesday 31 August: Second LV= Insurance U19 Test – England U19 v Sri Lanka U19; Incora County Ground, Derby.

Limited-overs series

Monday 5 September: First Royal London U19 International - England U19 v Sri Lanka U19; New Road, Worcester.

Thursday 8 September: Second Royal London U19 International - England U19 v Sri Lanka U19; New Road, Worcester.

Saturday 10 September: Third Royal London U19 International - England U19 v Sri Lanka U19; Uptonsteel County Ground, Leicester.
