Kagiso Rabada completed his five-fer early on Day 2 as the South African pace quartet shot out the Englishmen for just 165 in their first innings. The speedster received much backing from young Marco Jansen and speed demon Anrich Nortje, with the duo claiming the remainder of the five English wickets.

The South African batters responded with intent, with openers Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee forming a rapid 85-run alliance at the top. The latter of the two charted the second 50-plus score of his Test career, one which began earlier this year in New Zealand.

The cricketer was eventually dismissed for a well-crafted 73, guiding his side to a 22-run lead by the time of his departure.

South African pacer Marco Jansen, who collected two wickets with the ball, showed first signs of his all-round potential by reaching his highest Test score with the bat. The tail-ender did bulk of the scoring in the twilight stages of the day, where the Proteas robbed 63 runs from the hosts in the final 10 overs.

Among the English bowlers, captain Ben Stokes posed several questions with the ball and was rewarded with three crucial wickets in the middle. Meanwhile, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Matthew Potts and Jack Leach all picked a wicket each as the visitors mounted a 124-run lead by reaching 289-7 before stumps.

Brief scores:

England: 165 (45)

Ollie Pope 73 (102), Ben Stokes 20 (30)
Kagiso Rabada 5-52, Anrich Nortje 3-63

South Africa: 289-7 (77)

Sarel Erwee 73 (146), Dean Elgar 47 (81)
Ben Stokes 3-53, Jack Leach 1-42

South Africa lead by 124 runs
