ENG vs NZ | Root equals Alastair Cook's record of youngest to 10,000 Test runs

Former England Test captain Joe Root completed 10,000 runs in Test cricket, becoming the joint youngest in history with former England Test opener Alastair Cook.

Chasing 277, England were in all sorts of problems as they were 69/4 at one stage, having lost both openers, no.3 Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow, early in the fourth innings.

Once again, Joe Root came to the rescue and remained unbeaten at 77 after the end of day three on Saturday (June 4th) and was on the verge of making history on day four.

While coming into the day four, Root needed 23 runs to reach the milestone, and England were 216 for 5, needing 61 more to win.

During the 77th over, Root flicked Southee towards deep midwicket for a couple and completed his 26th Test century, and his 10,000 Test runs as well.

Root became the 14th player in history to go past the 10,000 mark in Tests and the youngest to do so, equaling his former skipper, Cook, at 31 years and 157 days. The Sheffield born cricketer took 118 Tests and 218 innings to reach there.

The Yorkshireman also becomes the only second English batter to reach 10,000 Test runs after Sir Alastair Cook.

Sachin Tendulkar held that record before Cook (31 years 326 days), followed by South African legend Jacques Kallis (33 years 133 days) and Australia's Ricky Ponting (33 years 163 days) completing the top five.
