ENG vs NZ | 1st Test | Joe Root's magnificent century guides England to win Lord's Test

The new Era of English Test Cricket under the stewardship of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum started with a bang as the hosts registered a thumping 5-wickets win over the reigning World Test Champions in the opening Test at Lord's.

Former skipper Joe Root was the true architect of the run chase as he brought up his 26th Test century in the 77th over of the innings as England registered their second win in the last 18 matches in the longest format to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

On the other hand, Ben Foakes endorsed the big English man, having played a 32 run knock and sharing an unbeaten & match-winning 120 run stand with the former skipper.

Coming on day 4, England needed 61 runs to wrap up the first Test against New Zealand after an incredible Stuart Broad spell with the second new ball, which brought the Kiwis to their knees in the morning session of the third day.

At the end of the third day's play, England were in a commanding position after a few early hiccups, with Root unbeaten at 77 and skipper Stokes smacking 54 runs to lay a foundation for the 277-run chase.

Earlier, New Zealand, in the second innings, set a target of 277 on board, courtesy of the terrific partnership between the centurion Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell.

However, the New Zealand's seamers, who wreaked havoc earlier to restrict England from taking a huge lead found no swing on a chilly morning of the fourth day and failed to scalp a single wicket with Root and Foakes walking on a cake to complete the chase in the first hour of the game itself.

The second Test of the three-match series is scheduled to be played at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham, starting June 10 (Friday).
