#OTD in 2009 | Netherlands created history by beating England in T20 World Cup

On this day in 2009, the Netherlands beat England by four wickets in the opening match of the T20 World Cup. It served as a major upset for the home team at the Lord's Cricket Ground.

The Dutch team won the toss and invited the English team to bat first. Both the openers, Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright, provided a good start to the team, with the former as the key aggressor.

Bopara made sure to hit the boundaries of the loose deliveries, and England already crossed the score of 50 in the first six overs. Then, as the fielding restrictions eased, the big shots helped England cross 100 in 11 overs.

Ryan Ten Doeschate delivered a slower ball in the next over to make Bopara (46) holed out to Pieter Seelaar in the deep mid-wicket boundary. A couple of overs later, Owais Shah (5) attempted a flick shot but gave an easy catching opportunity at the square-leg boundary.

In the 16th over, all-rounder Peter Borren dismissed Eoin Morgan (6). Just as it was looking that Wright and Paul Collingwood were heading the home team to a fine flourish, the former was caught in the deep-mid wicket for 71 off 49, with Doeschate as the wicket-taker.

In the end, England posted 162 on the board and were somewhat 10-15 runs short, based on the flat surface.

In reply, the Dutch opener Alexei Kervezee tried to fancy his chances off James Anderson due to the fielding restrictions but was holed out to Stuart Broad at mid-on. Darron Reekers provided two lusty blows but was dismissed by Broad for 20 off 13.

Thereafter, Tom de Grooth arrived at the crease and hit a few boundaries to sail the team past 50 in the powerplay overs.

On his debut, Adil Rashid produced a brilliant leg-spin delivery to send Bas Zuiderent back to the pavilion for 12 off 16.

Then, Tom and Borren continued the team's fine momentum, and every boundary gave hope to the Dutch team. Just one short of a half-century, Tom's leading edge off Paul Collingwood was caught at silly mid-off position by Robert Key. At this moment, the Netherlands were at 116/5 and needed 47 off 42 balls.

A few overs later, Borren mistimed his pull shot off Anderson and was caught by Shah after scoring 30 off 25 balls.

The Dutch team needed 7 off 6 to win the match, and Broad was the bowler for England.

In the first two balls, Broad missed the run-out chances of Doeschate and Edgar Schiferli, with both going for a single, followed by a missed follow-through catch.

With 2 needed off 1, Broad delivered a perfect yorker but missed a run-out chance, and the resulting overthrow meant the Netherlands team secured a famous win in the ICC event.

Tom de Grooth was awarded the 'Man of the Match' award for his knock of 49 off 30 balls.

After this fixture, the Netherlands team lost to Pakistan and were eliminated. England reached the next stage but could not seal the semifinal spot.
