The Fourth season of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)'s The Hundred tournament will commence on July 23. Ahead of the upcoming season, there are reports that the ECB  is mulling to switch the tournament to a 20-over format.

Despite the plans, the board have to continue with the shorter format till 2028 because of TV rights and will only shift to a 20-over format in 2029.

However, the board will keep the competition’s name The Hundred only because of its brand value. Notably, the tournament is named 'The Hundred' because of its 100-ball innings divided into sets of five or 10 balls instead of overs.

Talking about the TV rights, then Sky holds the rights for the tournament until 2028 and are not keen on changing the format of the tournament.

“We have no plans to abandon the Hundred. Our plan is to grow the competition and build on its success, whatever the format. Hundred is a well-known cricketing term so keeping the competition’s name will not be a problem. It’s a really powerful brand that has attracted interest from all over the world. But T20 is the global format and will be an Olympic sport from 2028 so we have to explore that option,” said A Source.

There were also reports that the Hundred are looking for private investors and CSK owners, Lalit Modi and a few others have expressed their interest to buy stakes in the tournament.

Meanwhile, in a delight for the 'The Hundred' fans, Ben Stokes will return to the league after three years in the upcoming edition.
