As expected, the Delhi Capitals franchise has handed over the captaincy reins to Australia's David Warner in the absence of Rishabh Pant for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

Meanwhile, Axar Patel will be Warner's deputy for this edition of the IPL.

Head coach Ricky Ponting has given his approval to the team management for Warner's appointment, who the former thinks is the best candidate to lead the club. Pant continues to be in rehab after his horrific incident on New Year's Eve forced the star batter out of action.

This will be Warner's second stint as Delhi skipper, having led them in multiple matches as stand-in leader last year.

Warner, who has been an IPL legend, was Delhi's leading run-getter in IPL 2022, scoring 432 with five fifties. The southpaw had earlier captained Sunrisers Hyderabad and guided them to their first-and-only IPL title in 2016.

The 36-year-old is the joint-fifth most successful captain in IPL in terms of matches won; winning 35, and losing 32 with two matches ending in a tie.

Warner had a poor Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, making just 26 runs in two Tests before returning home due to an injury.

He is back in India for the ODI series, however, his participation remains subject to fitness.
