In a major development, Gujarat Titans have drafted Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka into their squad for the remainder of the ongoing IPL 2023. Shanaka replaces legendary New Zealand batter Kane Williamson, who was recently ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury.

Despite being extremely talented, Shanaka went unsold in the IPL mini-auction conducted in December last year.

However, the swashbuckling batter grabbed a million eyeballs by showcasing his extraordinary finishing prowess on the India tour.

Statistically, Shanaka emerged as Sri Lanka’s wrecker-in-chief with the bat, amassing 121 runs, including a magnificent ton at a marvellous strike rate of 102.54.

Therefore, as it seems, the Titans’ management seems impressed with the Lankan superstar’s hard-hitting abilities, as they have replaced Williamson with him.

With multiple domestic players available to bat at the top, this call seems to be a masterstroke by the Titans, as Shanaka can assist the likes of David Miller and Rahul Tewatia in the finishing department.

Also, the impact player rule makes him an asset, as he can be a substitute at any stage of the game.

Meanwhile, Williamson has returned to New Zealand to undergo rehabilitation. However, with the gravity of his injury yet to be determined, it’s unclear how long he will be out of action.
