In what could be a massive blow for New Zealand, experienced all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I tri-series following a finger injury.

Notably, Mitchell fractured his finger during a training session, which sidelined him from the tri-series involving Pakistan and Bangladesh as the other two teams.

Although the severity of the injury is yet to be determined, Mitchell's participation in the T20 World Cup is in jeopardy, with the showpiece event being around the corner.

Here's what New Zealand coach Gary Stead stated

"Daryl's become a really important player to our T20 unit and we're certainly going to miss his all-round skills and versatility in the tri-series,"

"With our first game of the World Cup in just over two weeks we need to take some to consider Daryl's recovery timeline and his potential involvement in the tournament."

Mitchell played a vital role in propelling New Zealand to the finals in the World Cup last year. Opening the batting, the swashbuckling right-hander amassed 208 runs at a magnificent strike rate of 140.54.

He has been a consistent performer with the bat for the Blackcaps, which is why his absence might severely affect their World Cup campaign.

The T20I tri-series will serve as New Zealand's final dress rehearsal before the World Cup. The Kane Williamson-led outfit will lock horns with their trans-tasman rivals Australia in the first match of the mega event.
