The two best batsmen in the current Pakistan team, openers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are often criticised for their average strike rate in the game’s shortest format. While both the players are run-machines, the rate at which they score runs has not impressed fans.
Recently, the Pakistan skipper scored a century against England, but it was his average strike rate which made more noise.
Talking about how Pakistan as a team, as well as the players individually, are often criticised by their fans, Ramiz Raja gave an example of Virat Kohli’s century against Afghanistan at the Asia Cup, and how much the Indian fans rejoiced despite India’s overall ordinary campaign at the event.
“Previously we used to falter at the very first hurdle. Yes we reached the final and yes we did not play well. But it's okay to have a bad day. But there were other teams as well in the Asia Cup. I mean then India should then have been severely criticised for not reaching the final. But that is not what their fans and media do,” said Raja.
Pakistan, who reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup last year, will be looking to go one step ahead in the tournament this year. Shaheen Afridi, who missed the Asia Cup 2022 as well as the two bilateral series that followed, will be playing the T20 World Cup that gets underway later this month.
Naseem Shah has also recovered from Covid-19 which kept him out of the last few matches against England. Pakistan boast of a lethal pace attack, but their batting is largely dependent on Rizwan and Azam.
