In a development that could shock many, marquee Australian cricketers Pat Cummins and Travis Head were reportedly offered a whopping amount of $10 million each to quit Australian cricket and represent a particular franchise across global T20 leagues. However, the report states that the Australian mainstays declined the lucrative deal and chose national duty over money.
IPL franchise offers $10 millions per year to secure Cummins and Head; star duo declines
As reported by The Age, Pat Cummins and Travis Head were approached by a certain IPL franchise with a lucrative offer. The franchise apparently told Cummins and Head that they would each be paid $10 million per year if they quit Australian cricket and made themselves available for global T20 leagues, where the franchise has its teams.
Had Cummins and Head agreed to it, they would've received an amount of approximately INR 58.2 Crores, which is way bigger than what they get annually as Australian cricketers (approximately INR 8.74 Crores, according to The Age).
However, the experienced duo didn't fall for it and chose country over money, declining the offer. It's worth mentioning that these two players are the integral members of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in the Indian Premier League. Apart from the IPL, the Sunrisers also have their stakes in The Hundred and SA20, owning the Northern SuperChargers and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, respectively.
Talking about Cummins, the Australian Test and ODI captain was retained for a massive amount of INR 18 crores by SRH for the IPL 2025. Head was also one of SRH's high-profile retentions, extending his association with the franchise through a deal of INR 14 Crores.
Cummins, Head go against the modern trend
While Cummins and Head declined the offer, several cricketers from West Indies, New Zealand and South Africa have started the trend of preferring leagues over national assignments towards the backend of their careers. Kane Williamson continues to be a freelancer, while Nicholas Pooran and Heinrich Klaasen retired earlier than expected to explore opportunities across different T20 leagues.
