It seems that Chennai Super Kings’ hasn’t had enough of their former opening batter Faf du Plessis. The franchise has trusted the former South African captain to give them a perfect start in the CSA T20 League.

CSK are considered one of the most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League. They have won the glorious T20 title four times in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. The MS Dhoni-led side is ready to spread its wings. They have now purchased the Johannesburg team in the inaugural edition of CSA T20.

Unsurprisingly, the first draft player picked by the franchise was Faf du Plessis. The opening batter has a special connection with the team. He joined the franchise in 2011 for IPL and played a vital role in steering the team to victory.

CEO Viswanathan pleased with Faf’s recruitment

It was in 2022 that the two had to part ways. During the mega-auction, CSK lost their star player to Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was pretty evident that the Yellow Army missed the services of du Plessis at the top as they finished at the second-last place in the points table with four wins and ten losses.

CSK CEO KS Viswanathan seemed extremely delighted with the roping of the veteran cricketer for the CSA T20 tournament. The official hoped to get benefit from the batter’s experience as a player and captain on the Proteas pitches.

In a press release, Viswanathan added,

“Faf (Du Plessis) has been a backbone of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL for the last 10 years. He has been one of the most consistent players for our team. We were not fortunate to pick him up during the last auction in the IPL. We were looking for an opportunity and that came up in the CSA T20 League.”

CSK’s four draft players for CSA T20 League

Apart from Du Plessis, the four-time champion have shown faith in the likes of Moeen Ali, Maheesh Theekshana, and Romario Shepherd. Meanwhile, they have also included the South African seamer Gerald Coetzee in the squad as Cricket South Africa has given the liberty to the teams’ to pick one domestic cricketer.

The signing of Ali and Theekshana shouldn’t have been a tough decision for the team. The two players form a part of the CSK squad in the Indian Premier League. Shepherd has also carved a niche for himself in the T20 format owing to his good performances in the Caribbean Premier League.
