Shardul Thakur credits Mohammed Siraj for his performance in the 2nd ODI

India’s second One Day International against Zimbabwe was all about Shardul Thakur’s exploits with the bat. After missing the first ODI, the batter made a comeback in the second match only to cause carnage with his perfect pace and length.

The seamer exhibited class as he played a vital role in restricting the opposition to a score of 161 runs in the first innings. Shardul accounted for three wickets including the likes of Innocent Kaia, Luke Jongwe, and Zimbabwean skipper Regis Chakabva. In his seven overs, the bowler conceded only 38 runs to maintain a good economy rate of 5.4.

Thakur and Siraj indulge in a conversation

The cricket fraternity couldn’t stop singing praises for the 30-year-old. However, Thakur credited his contemporary Mohammed Siraj for his success against Zimbabwe. As the seam all-rounder mainly bowled in the middle-overs he took cues from Siraj’s line and length.

In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Thakur mentioned,

“Before I came in first change, I noticed the line and length you bowled and tried to execute the same. I just tried to figure out the difficulties for batters. I tried to keep things simple, nothing else”.

The all-rounder to form a part of India’s ODI squad?

Meanwhile, the Palghar-born also revealed the mantra of his success as a bowler in the gentlemen’s game. Thakur believes that his hunger for wickets has prompted him to do well for India. The all-rounder is always looking to give crucial breakthroughs to his team by breaking partnerships.

He will now be hoping to carry forward the momentum in the third ODI to deliver another match-defining performance for the Men in Blue. In 23 One Day Internationals, he has picked a decent 34 wickets at an economy rate and average of 6.54 and 33.34.

Though Shardul has done well so far, he needs to up his game to earn a permanent place in the Indian squad. The all-rounder doesn’t form a part of India’s Asia Cup squad and his place in the ODI World Cup 2023 is also questionable.
