Former Chennai Super Kings batter Faf du Plessis has been named as the marquee signing for the CSK-owned Johannesburg team in the upcoming Cricket South Africa (CSA) T20 League, as per a report in Cricbuzz.

In a staggering development last month, Chennai Super Kings Sports Limited acquired the Johannesburg-based franchise in the inaugural T20 league of South Africa, which is set to begin from January 2023.

The former South African skipper, who had been a part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise for almost a decade, moved to the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2022 edition. Even the CSK management felt bad for not being able to retain him at the mega auction. However, Faf will be linking up with the CSK-owned team next year.

The last day for the direct acquisition of players for the CSA T20 League was Wednesday, August 10 and the Super Kings managed to acquire the services of Proteas legend Faf du Plessis.

du Plessis had made his IPL debut for Super Kings in 2011 and since then he has been a regular feature in the side, barring a couple of seasons when Chennai hadn’t played the IPL.

Faf will return in Yellow next year

"Wednesday (August 10) was the last day for the direct acquisition of players for the six-team league, to be launched early next year. Bound by a confidentiality clause, the six franchises, all owned by the IPL teams, refused to disclose their star signings, but it can confirm that du Plessis, a former CSK regular, is back with his old team,"

According to the report, England and CSK star all-rounder Moeen Ali has also joined the Wanderers-based franchise.

"Moeen (Ali) featured in the marquee players list of the UAE League (ILT20) too but the English all-rounder, who represents CSK in the IPL, is understood to have preferred the South Africa tournament, to be held alongside the ILT20 in January-February."

The reports have also stated that the South African franchise will boast the same yellow theme as CSK. Apart from CSK, five more IPL franchise owners have bought the remaining five teams in the new South African T20 league. The league is set to take place between January and February 2023.
