Cricket Australia has decided to remove Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh from the Hundred, which has further negatively impacted the reputation of the tournament. Originally, Maxwell and Marsh were set to represent London Spirit, with contracts worth £125,000 (US$160,000).

However, they have been instructed to withdraw from the competition to ensure they can effectively manage their workload leading up to Australia's preparations for the 50-over World Cup in India, as well as the T20 World Cup taking place in the Caribbean and the United States next year.

"In discussions with both players it was agreed that with a long campaign ahead, including two World Cups, it's in their best interests to be physically refreshed and at their best for the one-day World Cup and beyond. Both are also coming from recent injuries," a CA spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo.

The withdrawal of Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh from the Hundred has created a situation where London Spirit needs to find two replacement overseas players just a month before the tournament commences. Unfortunately, many potential alternatives have already made commitments to participate in other leagues such as the Global T20 Canada, the Caribbean Premier League, or the Lanka Premier League, all of which coincide with the dates of the Hundred from August 1-27.

Throughout its initial two seasons, the Hundred has faced difficulties in securing top overseas players for the entire duration of the tournament. Once again, teams have prioritized player availability over star quality leading up to the 2023 edition.
