After spending just over a year as a part-timer with the White Ferns, former New Zealand allrounder, Craig McMillan has now been appointed as the women’s assistant coach. He will be working closely with head coach Ben Sawyer and batting coach Dean Brownlie with his new role officially beginning this week.

NZC confirmed the move in a statement, adding that Craig McMillan will not only focus on the national team but also help develop players in the women’s players of interest programme, “as he steps back from his successful commentary career and other coaching commitments.”

The ex-Blackcap couldn’t hide his joy at the opportunity.

“I’m over the moon to be in this role,” McMillan said in a statement as he recalled his journey with the squad.

Having been part of the support staff when New Zealand Women lifted the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year, he knows the winning feeling well.

“The women’s game is going from strength to strength, and I’m excited to continue to work with our talented players and help them reach their goals. The last year has gone so quickly and I’ve loved every minute of being part of a team that continues to improve, challenge one another, and does special things on the world stage.”

Eyes On The 2025 ODI World Cup

There’s no rest for McMillan and company. The White Ferns are already gearing up for the women’s ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka later this month. Camps have been running hot, including a key one in Chennai to get the players used to subcontinental conditions.

“It’s been a busy period leading into the 50-over World Cup,” McMillan admitted. “We’ve had a number of camps including one in Chennai which exposed the players to Indian conditions like what they’ll face in October-November. The team is pumped to get back to India and take on another World Cup.”

Big Decisions Ahead

The next box to tick is selection. The New Zealand Women squad for 2025 ODI World Cup is expected to be announced on September 10 and with competition for spots heating up, the final call won’t be an easy one.

For now, though, the White Ferns have a trusted voice in the dugout, one who knows how to dig deep, hit out of trouble and lift the team when it matters most. McMillan’s appointment may just be the boost New Zealand need as they eye another shot at glory.
