Irrespective of the field, there is always immense intrigue among people around children of legends. In this day and age of social media, finding out what your favourite cricketer or actor’s children are up to isn’t a daunting task.
The latest in this category to break the internet is Riley McCullum, son of former New Zealand captain and current England head coach Brendon McCullum. Riley, 20, was part of the seventh edition of T20 Black Clash, an annual celebrity match played between some of the biggest names in New Zealand cricket and rugby.
Riley McCullum Smashes Uncles Nathan’s Team
Riley, who represented Team Rugby under Kieran Read, rubbed shoulders with Universe Boss Chris Gayle in what must’ve been an opportunity of a lifetime. With uncle Nathan McCullum, Brendon’s younger brother, as an opponent, the left-handed batter made the most of a batting opportunity at No. 7.
In need of a 211-run target, Riley’s team fell short by 5 runs but he didn’t leave any stone unturned in leaving a mark. Riley, who scored 23* (11) with the help of three fours and a six, hit boundaries off former Black Caps namely Anton Devcich and Todd Astle.
While neither of the two bowled at full capacity, Riley, as a typical left-hander, targeted the mid-wicket region to accumulate runs.
For the unversed, Brendon had started playing international cricket when he was his son’s age. Riley, on the other hand, is yet to play a representative match. Unlike his father, who represented Otago back in the day, Riley was part of Northern Districts’ U-19 squad in 2023.
Chris Gayle Lights Up The Hagley Oval
Gayle’s all-round performance was one of the highlights of the annual event. After registering bowling figures of 3/25, the hard-hitting batter scored 35 (21) consisting of seven fours before being dismissed by former New Zealand pacer Kyle Mills.
In addition to the aforementioned former cricketers, the likes of Grant Elliott, Adam Parore, Hamish Marshall and Lou Vincent were also seen plying their trades in Christchurch on Saturday.
