England Test captain Ben Stokes has expressed his sincere apologies to those who have faced racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination in cricket. He acknowledged the need for the game to be more inclusive and diverse.

The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) conducted a two-year investigation and revealed widespread instances of racism, sexism, classism, and elitism in England and Wales cricket.

Stokes, although admitting that he hasn't read the extensive 317-page report yet, assured that the players would do everything possible to ensure cricket becomes a sport for everyone. In a statement before the second Ashes Test against Australia, Stokes emphasized the importance of celebrating diversity in cricket and learning from past mistakes.

He expressed his deep apologies to those who have felt unwelcome in the game, and emphasized the need for a safe and inclusive environment at all levels, regardless of background, race, or gender. Stokes called for a more inclusive and diverse cricketing community, allowing individuals to feel accepted and valued.

“To the people involved in the game who have been made to feel unwelcome or unaccepted in the past, I am deeply sorry to hear of your experiences. Cricket is a game that needs to celebrate diversity on all fronts because without diversity, this game would not be where it is today. As a sport, we need to learn from past mistakes and do all we can to make people feel safe and be themselves at every level.

I have been an England player since 2011 and I feel very fortunate to have been a part of some incredibly diverse teams and love how everyone has a different story to tell. We must go further and be more inclusive and diverse because the game I love – and millions worldwide love – should be enjoyed without fear of discrimination or judgment whether that be due to your upbringing, race or gender,”  Ben Stokes said in a press meet before the Lord’s Test.

The path towards progress requires collective efforts from all stakeholders involved in cricket. Stokes' sincere apology serves as a starting point for initiating crucial conversations and implementing meaningful changes within the sport.
