BCCI unlikely to sack Gautam Gambhir as Test coach despite humiliating SA series loss: Report

The BCCI has decided not to take any sudden or drastic action after India suffered yet another disappointing Test series loss at home. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has been facing heavy criticism, will not be removed from his position despite the team’s poor performance.

On November 26, India was thrashed by South Africa by 408 runs in the second Test in Guwahati, their biggest defeat by runs in Test history.

This loss confirmed a 0-2 whitewash, the second time in just over a year that India has been swept in a home Test series. Because of these repeated failures, there was a lot of talk that the BCCI might replace Gambhir. Some reports even suggested that VVS Laxman could take over as the Test coach.

BCCI chooses long-term vision over instant fixes

However, sources later revealed that BCCI is not planning to replace him. They noted that his contract lasts until the 2027 World Cup, and they want stability while the team goes through a transition phase.

Sources also said that a meeting will be held between the selectors and the team management after the South Africa white-ball series to discuss the next steps.

"We are not looking to replace Gautam Gambhir at the moment. He is rebuilding a team. His contract runs till the 2027 World Cup," BCCI sources told NDTV.

"There will be a meeting between team management and selectors at the end of the South Africa tour. Gambhir will be asked how to pick up the test team's performance while transitioning," the sources added.

It is important to note that under Gambhir, India have played 19 Tests, winning 7, losing 10, and drawing 2, giving him a win rate of under 37%.

Though there were some good moments, like 2-0 home wins against Bangladesh and the West Indies, major defeats have overshadowed them, especially last year’s 0-3 home loss to New Zealand and now the sweep by South Africa.
