India ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah may not play in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, according to recent reports. This comes after the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) let him leave the Indian team during their tour of England, where he skipped the final Test match to avoid any risk of injury.

Bumrah has had a heavy workload recently. During the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England, he bowled almost 120 overs in just three Test matches, taking 14 wickets including two five-wicket hauls. But in the third Test, he looked tired and gave away over 100 runs in one innings, something that had never happened in his career before.

Bumrah Might Sit Out Asia Cup To Avoid Injury Before WI Test Series

Before the England tour, India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar and new head coach Gautam Gambhir had already said Bumrah wouldn’t be playing all five Tests to help manage his fitness.

Now, with the Asia Cup starting on September 9, and a Test series against the West Indies just days after that, Bumrah is likely to skip the Asia Cup 2025. The selectors are in a tough spot, deciding whether to play him in the T20 tournament or save him for more important Test matches where World Test Championship points are on the line.

A BCCI source told PTI:

"It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup."

The official also hinted that Bumrah could instead focus on Test cricket and skip limited-overs matches, including most ODIs, in the build-up to the T20 World Cup in 2026. He may return for T20I matches, such as the New Zealand series in January, which would serve as a warm-up for the World Cup.

This workload strategy could also affect his availability for South Africa Test series coming up in November. As of now, selectors Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will take the final call based on Bumrah’s fitness and long-term performance planning.

India’s Asia Cup campaign kicks off on September 10 against UAE, followed by a high-voltage match against Pakistan on September 14. Given the team’s strong form, India are expected to go deep into the tournament. However, with Test matches right around the corner, Bumrah’s presence in the Asia Cup looks increasingly doubtful.
