Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been fined 25% of his match fees and given one demerit point for breaking the IPL Code of Conduct. This incident took place during KKR’s match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

What Happened During The CSK vs KKR match?

During the second innings of the match, Varun dismissed CSK’s middle-order batter Dewald Brevis and gave him a send-off gesture. The IPL did not specify the exact gesture but mentioned that it violated Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct.

This rule covers any language, action, or gesture that could provoke an aggressive reaction from the dismissed player.

Varun Chakravarthy Admits His Fault

Varun admitted to his mistake, accepting the Level 1 offence under Article 2.5.

“Varun Chakaravarthy admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” said the IPL via a press release.

Despite Varun’s impressive performance of taking 2 wickets for just 18 runs in his four overs, KKR couldn’t defend their total of 179 runs. CSK emerged victorious, thanks to crucial knocks from Brevis (52 off 25 balls), Urvil Patel (31 off 11 balls), and Shivam Dube (45 off 40 balls). MS Dhoni sealed the win for CSK in the final over with a big six.

What’s Next For KKR In IPL 2025?

This loss leaves KKR in a tough spot on the points table, currently sitting at sixth place with 11 points from 12 matches. Their chances of making the playoffs now look slim.

KKR’s next two matches are away games against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 10 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 17.
