Playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is one distinction, and getting to the 100-wicket landmark is a massive milestone. However, there are many who have done that incredibly well, taking the fewest innings to reach the landmark.
In the long, 18-year history of the IPL, there have been few bowlers who have decimated the opposition with their incredible skillsets, as they have managed to get the better of the opposition with some fierce bowling.
Be it spinners or pacers, both have had their time with the ball as despite being the batter's game, bowlers have had tremendous success in the past. Therefore, in this article, we will look at the bowlers who have achieved the 100-wicket landmark in the IPL in fewest matches.
4. Varun Chakaravarthy*, Ashish Nehra, Rashid Khan, Amit Mishra - 83 Matches
The number four spot is jointly shared by Kolkata Knight Riders' Varun Chakaravarthy, Ashish Nehra, Gujarat Titans' Rashid Khan, and veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra, all of whom achieved 100 wickets in just 83 IPL matches.
Focusing about Chakaravarthy, the mystery spinner is the newest entrant on the list, as he managed to pick his 100th wicket against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he bowled a magnificent spell of 2 for 18 in his four overs. Adding to this, he has been incredible, with a career average of 23.31 while maintaining an economy of 7.47.
Moving to Ashish Nehra, the left-arm pacer, who featured in a total of 88 IPL matches, ended his career with a total of 106 wickets to his name, while GT's leg spinner Rashid Khan currently has 157 wickets in 132 games. Moreover, Amit Mishra, who was incredible in the IPL, is at 174 wickets in 162 matches.
3. Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar - 81 Matches
Now, moving to the number three spot, both Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar share this position, as they achieved the 100-wicket landmark in 81 matches.
Talking about Harshal, the Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer has been magnificent in the IPL, with a total of 149 scalps in 116 matches, whereas the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the IPL, with 193 wickets to his name in 186 matches.
Both have been incredible in the past, where they've managed to be an outstanding asset for their respective sides, especially in the death overs, as they have a mastery of bowling against explosive batters. Searing yorkers and change of phase is something both of them rely on and have been fairly successful, as evidenced by the stats.
2. Lasith Malinga - 70 Matches
Undoubtedly one of the finest players to ever play in the IPL, Mumbai Indians' pacer Lasith Malinga was just fabulous during his playing days. The Sri Lankan pacer is at the number two spot, as he took just 70 matches to achieve his 100th wicket in the IPL.
Overall, featuring for just Mumbai throughout his career, in 122 matches, Malinga grabbed a total of 170 wickets at an average of 19.79, where his economy was just 7.14.
Malinga was way too good for any opposition, he would outfox the batters with his pinpoint yorkers and sometimes rattle them with brilliant plans. In the record books, Malinga will go down as one of the finest to ever grace the field in this cash-rich league.
1. Kagiso Rabada - 64 Matches
At number one spot is Gujarat Titans pacer Kagiso Rabada, who took just 54 matches to grab his 100th IPL wicket. The South African spearhead has been tremendous in the past and is doing an incredible job where he has featured for three franchises so far namely Delhi Capitals (formerly Daredevils), Punjab Kings, and currently, Titans.
In his overall IPL career so far, Rabada has played in 82 matches where he has managed to pick 119 wickets at an average of 22.29 while maintaining an economy of 8.53. With his consistent line and length and accurate deliveries, Rabada would get under the skin of the batters and often dominate in all phases of the game.
Adding to this, he also has the experience of bowling under immense pressure and can take on the opposition with his perfect deliveries.
