Afghanistan cricketer Usman Ghani has decided to take a break from the sport. The opening batter has cited his exclusion from the national squad as the reason behind his decision, and further added that he is not happy with the current leadership of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).

Ghani was snubbed from Afghanistan’s squad for their upcoming limited-overs matches in Bangladesh. The two teams are scheduled to play three ODIs and two T20Is in July, and the matches serve as a testing ground for both sides ahead of the ODI World Cup in India later this year.

Ghani launches scathing criticism on ACB leadership

Usman Ghani was part of the Afghanistan squad that defeated Pakistan 2-1 in their three-match T20I series in UAE in March this year. Unfortunately for the 26-year-old, the fixtures in UAE marked his final set of internationals, at least for a while, as he was snubbed from Afghanistan’s touring party to Bangladesh.

He did participate in the subsequent Green Afghanistan One Day Cup 2023 for the Hindukush Strikers, where the top-order batter listed 188 runs across five innings at a productive average of 47.

After being excluded from the national squad for Bangladesh series, Ghani took to Twitter and announced that he will be taking a break from Afghanistan cricket. He added that he will continue his hard work and will only return to international reckoning once the right management and selection committee is put in place within the Afghanistan board.

The youngster further criticised ACB in a series of tweets, stating that he tried meeting the chairman for clarification behind his exclusion, but received no satisfactory response in return.

Ghani has played 17 ODIs and 35 T20Is for his country, ever since he made his international debut in 2014 as a 17-year-old.
