The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has applied visas for 45 Indian cricketers for their forthcoming tour to South Africa. The selection committee will soon be picking four lineups, including squads for India A, and the senior Indian teams for each of the three international formats.

The India A team will be coached by Sitanshu Kotak, Troy Cooley and VVS Laxman. The national team, on the other hand, will be coached by Rahul Dravid as part of his contract extension by the BCCI.

BCCI applies visas to prioritize Test and A matches

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman is currently serving as India’s interim head coach for the ongoing home T20I series against Australia in the absence of Rahul Dravid. Following the series, Laxman will be expected to travel back to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru before taking flight for South Africa with India A team.

In lieu of India A and senior team’s tour of South Africa, the BCCI has already applied for visas for 45 cricketers, and the first batch of players are expected to depart from Bengaluru on December 6.

With World Test Championship (WTC) points on the line, the selection committee will likely prioritize in selecting a full-strength Indian squad for the forthcoming two-match Test series. A win at this stage will also mark India’s first-ever Test series triumph in South Africa.

A number of senior players like Virat Kohli, who distanced themselves from India’s five-match T20I series following the conclusion of an emotionally-draining World Cup 2023, are expected to return for the Test matches.

Rohit Sharma has also confirmed his availability for the Test series even though he has expressed his reluctance for the white-ball games.

The tour will commence with the first T20I match on December 10 in Durban. The three-match T20I series will be followed by a three-ODI rubber, and the tour will conclude with Test matches in Centurion and Cape Town by January 7.
