Pakistan's premier batter Babar Azam has been fined ten percent of match fees under an ICC code of conduct breach charge. The International Cricket Council confirmed the development through an official announcement on its website.

ICC penalises Babar Azam for violating code of conduct

For the unversed, Babar Azam was frustrated after getting dismissed at a crucial juncture during Pakistan's final ODI against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The experienced campaigner hit stumps in frustration, thereby drawing the match referee's attention with the on-field misconduct.

The match officials found Babar Azam guilty of breaching article 2.2 of the ICC code of conduct which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

Additionally, the ICC has also added a demerit point to Babar Azam's disciplinary record. However, no formal hearing was conducted as Babar accepted the sanctions.

Talking about the game, Babar Azam contributed 34 runs to Pakistan's tally before Jefferey Vandersay got his prized scalp. The veteran cricketer was convincingly outsmarted and castled by the Lankan leg-spinner in the 21st over. However, his dismissal hardly impacted the outcome of the match, with Pakistan eventually chasing a paltry 212-run total inside 45 overs.

Despite not converting his start into a significant score, Babar Azam finished the Sri Lanka series with excellent numbers, amassing 165 runs at an average of 82.50 and a strike rate of 74.32, courtesy of a sensational hundred in the second match.

The hundred against Sri Lanka helped Babar overcome his century drought after a long time in international cricket. The talismanic cricketer will once again be seen in action during the upcoming T20I tri-series involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
