Babar Azam, the prolific modern-day batter from Pakistan, faced the wrath of the fans on the internet when he was dismissed for a 4-ball duck by Kwena Maphaka against South Africa. The veteran, who returned as an opener for the series, failed to tackle Kwena's quick, short-pitched delivery.
Pakistan were asked to chase 184 runs target in the first T20I against South Africa held in Durban. David Miller's 82 off 40 balls' carnage guided the Proteas to a competitive total after they initially dropped to 28/3 in the powerplay.
Meanwhile, for the second innings, Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam walked out to open the innings. Babar's promotion to the opening spot raised eyebrows, given Saim Ayub has been in great touch as an opener lately. However, with Babar making his comeback to the T20I side after a prolonged period of rest, Rizwan trusted his experienced teammate.
Babar Azam faces heat after another disaster performance
That being said, Babar Azam disappointed his captain Rizwan and millions of fans back in Pakistan as he was dismissed off a 4-ball duck, leaving his team in a lurch.
Facing Kwena Maphaka, Babar whipped an uppercut off a short-pitched delivery. However, the batter was unsettled by the pace of the delivery and miscued his shot. The ball went to Simelane at the third man, leading to an early dismissal for the ex-captain.
Meanwhile, as soon as Babar Azam made his walk back to the Pakistan dressing room, fans on the internet slammed him for his repeated failures. Many were worried about his deteriorating standards, with some also suggesting the right hander to step away from the T20I format.
Babar Azam has been going through a lean patch for over a year. Majority of his runs have come in losing causes and his slump has become a major cause of concern for the Pakistan cricket team.
Nonetheless, the South Africa tour offers an opportunity of redemption for Babar Azam as the senior has been included in the Pakistan squad for all formats.
