Sydney Sixers, unlike their name, have found six-hitting hard to come by this BBL 2025-26 season, landing them at an unfamiliar end of the BBL table. In their first eight matches, including seven completed fixtures and one no-result, the Sixers batters have struck just 28 sixes combined to languish at the bottom of the league’s six-hitting list.

The Sydney Sixers even find themselves nine sixes short of the next-worst team, the Adelaide Strikers (37 maximums). Much of Sixers’ six-hitting dearth can be attributed to the Babar Azam effect at the top of the order.

Sydney Sixers hit just 28 sixes in BBL 2025-26, Babar Azam gets three

The Babar Azam-starrer Sydney Sixers team has hit just 28 sixes in their first eight matches of the BBL 2025-26 season, with an average of 3.5 sixes per game. Among all eight sides this competition, the Sixers are placed at the bottom of the table among leading six-hitters, finding themselves as many as nine maximums lower than the second-worst team, the Adelaide Strikers.

Perth Scorchers leads the six-hitting race of the BBL 2025-26 season with 96 maximums, i.e., nearly 3.5 times more than Sydney Sixers’ tally.

One of the biggest culprits for the Sydney Sixers over their shortage in sixes is their star attraction and legendary Pakistani batter Babar Azam. Batting at the top of the order, Babar has struck just three sixes in his eight innings of the BBL 2025-26 season. Moreover, the seasoned pro has aggregated just 154 runs so far at an abysmal strike rate of 104.05 and with an underwhelming batting average of 25.66.

Star wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe has launched the highest number of sixes among all Sydney Sixers players this BBL 2025-26 with eight maximums in his seven innings, thus accounting for nearly a third of Sixers’ overall sixes count on his own.

Left-arm spinner Joel Davies is ranked second among all Sixers players with four maximums in five innings. His strike rate of 156.60 also marks significantly higher than several of Sixers’ top-order batters.

Sydney Sixers in must-win territory in BBL 2025-26

The arrival of Babar Azam seems to have created more problems than solutions for the Sydney Sixers, with the side’s power-hitting identity blunted and their batting approach appearing increasingly out of sync with the demands of the tournament. On occasions, their scoring rate has also taken a massive hit, resulting in some heavy losses as they head into the must-win territory of the BBL 2025-26 season.

Under the leadership of all-rounder Moises Henriques, the Sydney Sixers team has secured four wins and sustained three defeats, and a no-result in eight matches. With an NRR of 0.458, they are placed fifth on the BBL 2025-26 points table.

The Sydney Sixers now need to win each of their remaining two matches, with convincing margins, in a bid to secure an unlikely top two finish. However, the Sixers can still make it to top four and qualify for the knockouts with one win and certain exterior results.

They will now face Sydney Thunder at the SCG on January 16. The Sydney Sixers will eventually cap its league-stage run with a match against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba a couple of days later on January 18.
