The Delhi Capitals, under David Warner’s leadership, succumbed to five heavy defeats upfront in the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The franchise found some momentum in their subsequent two fixtures, as they managed to narrowly sneak past KKR and SRH in thrilling final-over finishes.

Despite their newfound confidence, the Capitals team management remains in tatters as their quest of a playoff’s qualification has now become an uphill battle going ahead.

One of the positives for Delhi Capitals from an otherwise lacklustre season so far has been the all-round brilliance of Axar Patel. Moreover, the Indian cricketer has now received some support from batting great Sunil Gavaskar to lead the franchise going ahead.

Axar Patel backed by Gavaskar to lead Delhi Capitals

Axar Patel was adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ for his all-round heroics in his side’s win against the SRH. The 29-year-old top scored with 34 and returned with two wickets from his tight four-over spell in a tense run-chase. So far this season, the Capitals star has piled up 184 runs across seven innings and has added six wickets to his IPL tally.

Former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar believes Axar Patel should be named as Delhi Capitals captain in place of struggling David Warner. The cricketer-turned-commentator claimed that Patel is currently in a good playing rhythm and an IPL captaincy gig will also be beneficial for Team India in the longer run.

While speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said:

“I believe Axar Patel should be appointed the captain of Delhi Capitals. He is an honest player. He's in a good rhythm. The Indian team can benefit from him being named the captain of the franchise and performing well. All these things should be done in a long run.”

Notably, Warner was named as Capitals skipper after regular captain Rishabh Pant was rested from the tournament. The dashing wicketkeeper-batsman was involved in a car accident last December, thus making way for the former SRH leader to take leadership role in Delhi Capitals.
