Australian players to incur financial losses with CA set to scrap the bonus scheme

Australian cricketers might suffer from significant financial losses as Cricket Australia plans to dissolve the bonus pool in upcoming times.

The final decision regarding the matter will be taken after the next round of pay negotiations between the board and the players in the coming weeks.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the board and the Australian Cricketers Association have agreed on a set of key principles so far, which include the next round of pay negotiations stimulating some drastic cultural changes in Australian cricket.

For information, the Australian players receive monetary incentives for impressive outings in international matches as per the bonus scheme.

This policy was introduced by Cricket Australia following Australia’s disastrous Ashes tour in 2011 to motivate its cricketers to upgrade their on-field performances.

However, after the infamous Cape Town ball-tampering incident, the cultural review report blamed this policy for polluting Australia’s cricket culture by instilling a ‘winning by any means’ mentality in the players’ minds.

In fact, the withdrawal of this scheme was among the significant recommendations of the review committee.

Although most of the recommendations are still left to be enacted, Cricket Australia chairman Lachlan Henderson openly announced scrapping the bonus scheme as his primary priority at the time of his election.

As per reports, the recommendations have suggested utilizing the bonus money for improving grassroots cricket and positive relationships with fans and sponsors.
