On January 1, Australia confirmed their squad for the fifth and final Ashes Test of the 2025/26 series, having clinched the series after the first three Tests. 

With Pat Cummins already announcing his absence from the final two Tests, Steve Smith, who is in search of his first century of the series, is set to remain the skipper and the mainstay in the middle order.

As they face England at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 with the aim to end the series 4-1, here's what the Australia squad for the New Year's Test looks like.

Australia retain the existing roster for the fifth Ashes Test

Having clinched the series well ahead of the final Test, the Aussies have backed their last Test's squad. While Jake Weatherald and Travis Head will stay at the top of the batting order, coach Andrew McDonald has guaranteed the playing XI spot for Usman Khawaja, who has been under the scanner for a considerable amount of time.

Additionally, he also admitted to uncertainty around Cameron Green's place in the XI for the final Test after the all-rounder's torrid time in the series, scoring only 112 runs in 6 innings and picking 3 wickets so far. Beau Webster, who has been impeccable since his Test debut, is in line to make his Ashes debut in Sydney.

"We know we've got a quality player sitting there waiting. We've got a batting order that we'd like to think that can function at a higher capacity, so we'll be having conversations leading into Sydney," said McDonald about the Green and Webster situation.

While the playing XI is yet to be announced, the Aussies have kept all five of their pacers from the squad. It remains to be seen whether they go with an all-pace attack or rope in Todd Murphy to the XI, considering the general nature and history of the Sydney pitch.
