Australia Domestic One-Day Cup: Josh Philippe century powers Western Australia to victory

Andrew Tye’s four-wicket haul and a century from Josh Philippe helped Western Australia outclass Victoria by 5 wickets in Match 2 of the ongoing Australia Domestic One-Day Cup 2022-23 at Junction Oval in Melbourne.

A 166-run opening partnership between Philippe and D’Arcy Short trounced inform Victoria and the defending champions started their title-defense with a win.

After being asked to bowl first, Western Australia got off to a great start with Jason Behrendorff and Joel Paris reducing the hosts to 30 for three with a brilliant spell of swing bowling in the first ten overs. Following that, captain Peter Handscomb and Matthew Short together tried to steady the ship and added 52 runs for the fourth wicket. Short departed after a quick 38-ball 43 and Victoria went on to lose half of their batting order with only 92 on the board.

However, Handscomb was joined by Jake Fraser-McGurk and the duo added 91 runs for the sixth wicket before Andrew Tye bowled McGurk for 36 off 42. After playing a second fiddle to both McGurk and Short, Handscomb finally started to accelerate his innings and went on to score 93 off 110. Tye once again rose to the occasion and sent the Victorian skipper back when he was looking dangerous. Victoria's lower order kept the scoreboard ticking till the end and managed a total of 274 for 9 at the end of 50 overs.

Andrew Tye was the pick of the bowlers with a figure of 4 for 54. Joel Paris was magnificent up front and finished with 2 for 44.


Josh Philippe, D’Arcy Short stars with the bat for Western Australia

Chasing the total of 275, Western Australia got off to a steady start, scoring 43 in the powerplay without any loss of wicket. Josh Philippe was brutal from the word go and brought up his fifty in just 51 balls and went on to score his second List A century in just 95 balls. Philippe departed after scoring 100 off 96 and added 166 runs for the first wicket with D’Arcy Short which set the tempo for the men in yellow.



After the departure of Philippe, Short, who played an anchor hand with Philippe at the other end, kept scoring at a similar rate. The left-hander missed out a well deserving century and departed for 90 off 113. Hilton Cartwright scored an unbeaten 26 off 22 and Western Australia chased the total rather comfortably with more than two overs to spare.

In bowling perspective Will Sutherland was the one who broke the opening partnership and finished with 2 for 54. Jonathan Merlo also got a couple of quick wickets and gave 47 in his eight overs.
