Rohit Sharma is likely to continue as India’s T20I captain through their upcoming home series against Afghanistan until the 2024 T20 World Cup set to be played in June this year. As of now, the legendary opener is on a self-imposed sabbatical from T20Is, considering he played the last of his 148 matches for India back during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

Rohit Sharma likely to lead India in T20Is again

India’s all-format skipper Rohit Sharma, in order to prioritize ODIs and Test matches, has not played a single T20I in nearly 13 months. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav led the Indian team in his absence instead, and their assignments featured a home series against Australia and an away challenge against Ireland, West Indies and South Africa.

As it turns out, Sharma is now set to make his return to the game’s most truncated format in lieu of this year’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to be played in the West Indies and the United States in June. According to a report floating on social media, the legendary opening batter will feature in India’s squad for their upcoming home series against Afghanistan between January 11 and January 17.

He will likely be retaining his leadership title through the three-game series against Afghanistan, which itself marks India’s final set of T20I fixtures before the T20 World Cup in June.

Rohit Sharma is currently in South Africa as India’s Test skipper for a two-match series. Under his leadership, the Indian team slumped to a huge defeat by an innings and 32 runs at Centurion. The star opener himself returned with scores of 5 and 0 as Team India’s famed batting line-up crumbled in front of a raging Proteas attack.

He will now lead the visitors in the series-deciding second Test match, set to be played between January 3 and January 7 at Cape Town.
