Rohit Sharma was at the hub of India’s 10-wicket win with another run-chase perfection. His unbeaten 74, coupled with opening partner Shubman Gill’s 67-run aggression helped India overcome Nepal in their final Asia Cup 2023 Group A match in Kandy.

While captain Sharma was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts, the cricketer also managed to claim a rare record through his innings.

Sharma surpasses Babar Azam and others for a huge record

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has turned up in seven Tests and 11 ODIs so far this year. While the opening batter has stacked up 540 Test runs and 468 ODI runs across all international matches in 2023, his latest match-winning knock against Nepal took him past the 1,000-run mark this year as captain.

By doing so, Sharma became the first captain in international cricket to amass 1,000 runs in 2023, achieving the feat before Pakistan skipper Babar Azam.

As of now, the Indian batting veteran has managed 1,008 runs in 22 innings at an astounding average of 50.04.

Remarkably, Sharma has decided to distance himself from T20I cricket off late, in a bid to focus on World Cup 2023 and World Test Championship (WTC) matches. The cricketer made his last T20I appearances back in November 2022 during the T20 World Cup in Australia.

In the meantime, the Indian captain, along with the rest of his troops, are bracing themselves for their Super Four share of matches this Asia Cup 2023.

Amidst rain threat, the ‘Men in Blue’ are slated to face arch-rivals Pakistan upfront on September 10.
