Kuldeep Yadav knocked over Sri Lanka in a tense Indian win this Asia Cup 2023. The ace spinner followed up his five-fer against Pakistan with figures of 4-43 against Sri Lanka the following day in Colombo to secure nine wickets in just two matches.

Yadav was employed into the crease by captain Rohit Sharma after sublime new-ball gambits from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj had jolted Sri Lanka’s run-chase at 25-3. The 28-year-old first accounted for Sadeera Samarawickrama, and removed another set batter Charith Asalanka the following over to reduce hosts to 73-5. The wrist spinner later polished off the tail to script a 41-run win for the Indian team.

Remarkably, wicketkeeper KL Rahul played a pivotal hand in Kuldeep Yadav’s first wicket of the innings. As per the spinner himself, his teammate behind the stumps had advised him to get the ball outside the off-stump line in a bid to dismiss a well-settled Samarawickrama.

Kuldeep Yadav, Rahul plotted to get Sadeera; give each other credit

After the match, Kuldeep Yadav spoke with Suryakumar Yadav and revealed how he plotted with wicketkeeper KL Rahul to dismiss Sri Lanka’s number four Sadeera Samarawickrama. The spin veteran said:

“KL Rahul had told me to spin the ball from outside the off-stump. I was bowling on the middle stump line and that was a bit easier for the batter to manage. So KL Rahul told me to get the ball outside the off-stump line and that worked really well because I also got a lot of drift. So I would thank KL Bhai for that.”

Apparently, KL Rahul was in no mood to take any credit as he praised Kuldeep for his brilliant execution with the ball. The wicketkeeper-batsman said:

“I don’t want to take any away credit from Kuldeep Yadav. He did the execution, I just passed the message.”

Kuldeep Yadav’s consecutive match-winning spells against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Colombo also extended his ODI tally to 150 wickets.

Nonetheless, both Yadav and KL Rahul will now turn up for their side in their final Super Four Asia Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh in Colombo. The match will be played out on September 15, just a couple of days prior to the tournament final at the same venue.
