Rohit Sharma has heaped praise on Sri Lanka for their phenomenal victory over India in a crucial Asia Cup clash on Tuesday (6 September).

Invited to bat first, India were off to a dismal start with the dismissals of their key batters KL Rahul and Virat Kohli early. However, Rohit and Surya Kumar Yadav stitched a 97-run stand, which ultimately saw them posting 173 on the board.

In response, Sri Lanka got their chase started on a strong note, with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis adding 97 runs for the first wicket in 11 overs. However, Sri Lanka received a setback when they lost four wickets in a space of 23 runs.

Then arrived the in-form batters, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and skipper Dasun Shanaka, who stitched an unbeaten 64-run stand to take the team home with one ball to spare.

In this regard, Sharma thinks Sri Lanka have delivered terrific performances in the last two games and are a quality team.

"When the opposition is 90 for no loss, you are already on the backfoot. I thought they got a brilliant start, we tried hard to take wickets but unfortunately wasn't our day.

"The last two games that they (Sri Lanka) have played, that tells they are a quality team."

In their last Super Four fixture, India will face Afghanistan on Thursday (8 September) in Dubai.

The Men in Blue will remain in contention for qualification into the Finals, if Afghanistan secures a win against Pakistan on Wednesday.
