India narrowly lost to Sri Lanka in the on-going Asia Cup 2022, which has largely reduced their chances of making it to the final. Batting first, India posted 174 runs on the board on the back of a half century from skipper Rohit Sharma. Sharma scored 72 off 41 laced with five boundaries and four maximums. While on the way to his 32nd half century in the T20I format, Rohit Sharma shattered two spectacular records in the Asia Cup, previously held by Sachin Tendulkar and Shahid Afridi.

With two of his four sixes during the half century, Rohit went past former Pakistan all-rounder Afridi to have hit the most sixes in Asia Cup history. Rohit leads the list with 29 maximums in 31 Asia Cup matches, followed by Afridi, who hit 28 sixes. Afridi is followed on the list by Suresh Raina with 18 sixes.

Rohit also became the highest run scorer from India in Asia Cup history, going past Sachin Tendulkar (970 runs). He also became the first Indian batsman to score 1000 runs in Asia Cup and third overall.

Despite Rohit’s masterclass, India lost the game by six wickets. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis stitched a partnership of 97 runs for the first wicket, which laid the foundation of Sri Lanka’s successful run chase.

India’s decision to play just two seamers in the XI along with Hardik Pandya has been widely criticised after the game. But in the post-match conference, the Indian skipper said the management deliberately went ahead with two main seamers.

“I wanted to try this combination of three seamers and two spinners- what happens. We are still looking for answers.
