Former Australian skipper Steve Smith took to his social media accounts to take a hilarious dig at former England skipper Alastair Cook and the English media with regard to their previous claims of Alex Carey not paying for the haircut.

Carey apparently took a haircut on Tuesday (July 18), prompting Smith to post a picture with him on social media with a tongue-in-cheek caption.

Smith also posted the same on his Instagram story, cheekily congratulating Carey for the haircut.

"I can confirm that Alex Carey has now had a haircut and that he paid for it" wrote Steve Smith on his Twitter account.

For the uninitiated, former England opener-turned commentator Alastair Cook had alleged during the first day of the Leeds Test that Carey apparently didn't pay for his haircut he had in the lead-up to the third Test.

As English media started investigating the story, Smith came to Carey's defence on his Threads account, stating that the wicketkeeper hadn't had a haircut during his stay in London.

“I can confirm that Alex Carey has not had a haircut since we were in London. Get your facts right.”

It was later confirmed that it indeed wasn't Carey who had a haircut. Cook later apologized for his false allegations.

Meanwhile, Smith will be looking to put the disappointments of his twin failures in his 100th Test with an Ashes-clinching knock in Manchester this week.

The 4th Ashes Tests will kickoff from 19th July.
