Australia's T20 World Cup worries deepened on Tuesday evening, as Marcus Stoinis became the latest entrant in the injury list after he took a blow during the Melbourne Stars' game against Adelaide Strikers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

This injury scare for Australia comes after a massive setback to Tim David earlier in the tournament, after he was ruled out due to a hamstring injury. Alongside the two, even Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, who are also a part of the provisional WC squad have been out of action due to hamstring and back problems, respectively.

World Cup bound Stoinis forced to retire out

The incident happened during the second innings, when Melbourne Stars needed to chase down just 84 runs, after bundling the opposition cheaply. However, after a topsy-turvy start to the chase, captain Stoinis had to walk in at 43/3 in the 9th over to stabalize the chase.

As he scored 23 off 20 and Stars required only 2 runs to win, a Jamie Overton good length delivery got the extra bounce rose up on the batter and hit his right thumb. The Stars skipper immediately called the physio in and walked out retired out. Tom Curran and Hilton Cartwright took case of the remaining runs and the Stars won by 6 wickets in 15.1 overs.

Fortunately, at the post game presentation, the winning captain shared a good news regarding the injury and revealed that there is nothing to worry about for the Australian camp, with the marquee event coming up in under a month's time.

"I think I’ll probably be getting the scan, but I think it’s okay. Honestly, I wanted to stay out there, but Lynny and Shorty talked some sense into me and told me to get off," he said.

Stoinis ended the match with 2/8 (3.3) and 23 (20) with a six and four to his name as MS went number 2 on the table with 6 wins in 9 matches.

Stoinis' promising form ahead of T20 World Cup

The T20 World Cup is set to begin on February 7 and as things stand, the ongoing BBL season has been good news for Mitchell Marsh and co. as Stoinis has already surpassed the 200-run mark in the competition, scoring 209 in 6 innings, at a strike rate of 133.12 and an average of 69.66.

With the ball, for the first time since 2018/19, he has equalled his best season, with 14 scalps to his name in 9 innings, averaging 15.57 at an economy of 7.20. His best figures came against derby rivals Melbourne Renegades, where he picked 3/33.
