Over the last few years, racism in England County circles has come into the open light, mainly after Azeem Rafiq's revelation about conduct in Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Following this cricketers like Jahid Ahmed, Zoheb Sharif, and Maurice Chambers also alleged racist language and conduct on Essex County Cricket Club.

Now, in the latest proceedings, Essex could potentially face a points deduction and a heavy fine after being charged with alleged 'systemic' racist language and conduct brought forward by the independent Cricket Regulator.

Essex County in trouble

In 2021, Essex appointed an independent senior lawyer Katharine Newton KC to look into the allegations leveled by the aforementioned players, after John Stephenson took over as County chief.

In a statement by the club, Essex confirmed that an independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) will hear the case, which is based on allegations between 2001 and 2010, which the county failed to address.

"It is alleged by the Cricket Regulator that there was systemic use of racist and/or discriminatory language and/or conduct at Essex, during the period between 2001 and 2010, which Essex failed to address. An independent panel of the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) will hear the case in due course."

Newton in her published report from December 2023, stated her findings where players' "ethnicity, race, and religious" were  "entirely normalised and tolerated behaviour" during the mid-1990s and 2013 period within the Essex dressing room culture.

Earlier in February, Essex did confirm about taking actions against individuals following Newton's report, however, the names were not disclosed.
