In the midst of the unexpected one-week postponement of IPL 2025 caused by escalating border tensions between Pakistan and India, another Indian cricket tournament is also under threat. The T20 Mumbai League, organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), is now likely to be suspended as well.
India and Pakistan find themselves in a war-like situation after the Indian army conducted ‘Operation Sindoor’ on Pakistan soil in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
On May 8, tensions rose as Pakistan launched drones into Indian airspace. As a precautionary measure, BCCI suspended IPL 2025 for a week.
MCA To Review T20 Mumbai League’s Schedule
Amid sudden escalation across the border, the MCA is likely to consider suspension of the T20 Mumbai League. The third season of the tournament was scheduled to be held from May 26 to June 5 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. 8 teams were set to compete this year, including 2 new franchises.
But with continuous 'Operation Sindoor' and increasing military and political tensions in the region, security fears have increased.
As a result, the MCA is now considering suspending the tournament for the time being. Though there has been no official announcement yet, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that the matches will go ahead as planned.
Interestingly, top Indian cricketers including Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Tushar Deshpande, Shardul Thakur, and Ajinkya Rahane were set to feature in the third edition of the T20 Mumbai League.
Will Rohit Sharma Sign Up For The T20 League?
India captain Rohit Sharma shocked the cricket world this week by announcing his retirement from Test cricket. However, despite being available during the T20 Mumbai League window, Rohit will not be playing in this year’s edition. The player auction for the league took place on May 7, moments before Rohit’s retirement announcement.
At that time, he was still an active international player and was not included in the draft or auction process. As per MCA rules, only players not involved in the England tour were expected to participate. Now that Rohit is officially retired, he technically qualifies, but his name wasn’t considered during team selections, so he won’t feature in the 2025 edition.
